Voiceover & Subtitling FAQs:

What is the difference between transcribing and subtitling?

While both services involve converting spoken word into written form, there are some key differences between transcribing and subtitling:

  • Multilingual transcription looks to convert spoken word in a language the reader can’t understand into written text they can understand, whereas subtitling involves creating written text that displays on a video
  • Multilingual transcriptions usually include more detailed summary of the spoken audio, including pauses, non-verbal sounds and so on, whereas subtitles look to capture only the spoken words, or perhaps even a summarised version of them
  • Multilingual transcriptions are often presented as a piece of text with no timestamps, whereas subtitles feature timestamps that let them synchronise with the video and appear at the relevant time
  • Multilingual transcriptions are ideal for spending longer with where the context demands it (for example, analysing linguistic patterns for research purposes) whereas subtitles are designed to facilitate the understanding of video content in real-time

What is a language voiceover?

A language voiceover – perhaps better known as a dub – is a rerecording of a voice in a different language to the original. Language voiceovers can be used in a wide range of contexts, from advertisements to market research interviews, and from corporate presentation videos to training courses.

There are many elements that determine the quality of a multilingual voiceover, including things like:

  • Accuracy of the translation, both in terms of meaning and in terms of its cultural resonance. An effective voiceover will retain both elements, meaning it remains engaging for audiences in other languages.
  • The talent of the voice actor, with the most engaging voiceovers coming from actors who can replicate the tonal and emotional aspects of the original. A sympathetic and convincing delivery can make or break the audience’s ability to engage with a voiceover.
  • Lip-syncing: if your voiceover is for footage where the original speaker can be seen, voiceover specialists will try to match their delivery as closely as possible with the mouth movements of the original. This is an important aspect of maximising immersion.

How do I subtitle a voiceover?

It’s often the case that a business will want to provide voiceovers and subtitles together, to increase the ease with which audiences across a range of languages can engage with the video. Our subtitling and voiceover services can involve whichever combination of these two services you require, meaning that the most effective way of subtitling a voiceover is to commission the services of a specialist.

What is localisation subtitling?

Subtitling involves more than just transcribing the content of the original audio. For an audience to be able to best engage with subtitled content, it should also have the following properties:

  • Culturally aligned, with expressions, slang, references and other nuanced parts of speech brought in line with the target culture rather than translated directly from the original
  • Localised, with punctuation, text direction, font size and other factors aligned with what is considered the norm in the region
  • Correctly timed, with timestamps updated where necessary to ensure that translated subtitles still display at correct times during the video

What is the typical cost of voiceover and subtitling?

This is a complex service with lots of moving parts, so we are not able to provide an estimated cost without reviewing the specifics of your project. To allow us to put together a bespoke quote for your voiceover and subtitling project, please get in touch and let us know what the project involves. We will review this information and come back to you as quickly as possible.
