History of the Dutch language

Dutch is from the Germanic family of languages. The world “Dutch” comes from the old Germanic word theodisk meaning ‘of the people’. However, it was only in the 1600s, when Holland rose up as an independent country, culturally and economically, that the modern meaning of Dutch was established. Before this time Dutch was a more general reference term, referring to any Germanic speaking area or language. Today Dutch is a very influential language; there are many words that have crept into the English Language that have Dutch origin including coleslaw, easel and yacht.
