Our Croatian translators are trained specialist translators and linguists who only produce Croatian translation in fields in which they have specialist knowledge. Accordingly we work with translators who are specialised in law and finance, mechanical engineering, marketing, medicine, logistics and much more. All of our translators translate exclusively into their mother tongue.
Croatian – did you know?
Croatia became a member of the EU on 1 July 2013 and as a result, Croatian became the 24th official language of the European Union. Like Serbian and Bosnian, the Croatian language derives from the Shtokavian dialect and belongs to the South Slavic language family. Research carried out on the Croatian language is called Slavonic and Croatian Studies.
Croatian uses the Latin alphabet and closely resembles Bosnian, Montenegrin and Serbian. This means that speakers of these languages are able to communicate with each other without too much trouble.
Around 4.2 million people speak Croatian in Croatia and another 2.8 million speak it as their mother tongue in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Austria, Italy, in the USA, South America, Australia and New Zealand.
At the time of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, the 1954 Novi Sad Agreement decreed that the languages Serbian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Bosnian be created as one language with various centres, also known as a pluricentric language. The collective term Serbo Croat also dates back to this time, although this is no longer in use.
Following the Croatian Spring (a political movement in the 1960s and 1970s which demanded more rights and autonomy for Croatia), Croatian was introduced as a subject in Croatian schools but only after the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1991, was Croatian declared an independent language. In 2005 the Council for Norms of the Standard Croatian Language was founded.
