Romanian language – Did you know?
The Romanian language is spoken by approximately 20-30 million people, the majority of which live in Romania. The official language of Romania, Romanian is also spoken in Hungary, Israel, Moldova and the Ukraine and is the only romance language spoken in Eastern Europe.
The Dacians were the first people to live in what is present day Romania, but they were dispersed by the Roman Empire in 106 AD. The Romans settled in the region and communication links with the Romanian territory and the rest of the Roman Empire were strong. Vulgar Latin was the prevalent language of this time. Latin was used in business and political communications with other parts of The Empire. Even today these strong links to Latin are clearly apparent; Romanian is extremely similar to Italian, the closest living language to Latin. To a certain extent written Romanian is distinguishable to a native Italian speaker. Interestingly Romanians find it easier to understand spoken Italian than Italians do Romanian. The lexical similarity Romanian has with Italian is a high 77%.
Romanian continues to evolve and borrow words from other languages, particularly French and Italian. Our Romanian translators are all native speakers who keep abreast of this evolution, ensuring you receive the most accurate and culturally correct translation possible.
