FAQ about interpreting
What is interpretation?
In the context of language and translation, interpretation is the process of understanding and translating communication, either spoken or signed, from a source language into a listener’s target language. The goal of interpretation is to provide a translation in as close to real-time as possible. By accurately interpreting and conveying meaning between two languages, an interpreter facilitates quick and effective communication between parties.
What is an interpreter?
The role of an interpreter is to facilitate verbal communication between people with different language backgrounds. Unlike translation, interpretation aims to be as close to real-time as possible, giving individuals the best chance of understanding and participating in the situation where interpretation is required.
As well as being highly proficient in the source and target languages, interpreters must have a range of skills and experience to succeed in the role:
- Listening skills
- Extensive vocabulary
- Subject matter expertise
- Respectful of cultural differences
- A good memory
- Adaptability and the ability to perform in many contexts
- Ability to perform under pressure
What is business interpreting?
Business interpreting is a specialised field of interpretation whereby multilingual orators are used to give your business a credible voice in a range of professional contexts, including meetings, presentations, phone calls, conferences, and negotiations to name but a few. Business interpretation can take place in person or digitally, and ensures that your business is able to communicate effectively with audiences in a range of contexts.
As well as being fluent in multiple languages, business interpreters must have a high level of industry and subject matter expertise to ensure they can understand, translate and effectively convey the meaning of potentially complex ideas. Our interpreters have the skills and expertise to interpret in industry-specific settings like legal, medical, retail, automotive, financial and more. They also have the professionalism and depth of experience required to perform in all levels of the business world, from small scale meetings to global business interactions.
What is an interpretation service?
An interpretation service is the professional provision of trained and experienced interpreters who can operate in the required contexts. The goal of interpretation services is the facilitation of communication between two or more parties who speak different languages
Interpretation services require in-depth knowledge and specialist equipment, including fluency in origin and target language/s, technical and industry proficiency soundproof booths, audio equipment, technicians with the training and expertise to operate it, and much more. Given the complexity of the service and its technical underpinning, businesses often choose to tap into the experience of established business interpretation services.
How much are interpreting fees?
Interpreting fees vary depending on the nature and scale of the job at hand, and we offer bespoke quotes for each project as a result. To find out how much interpreting services will cost you, please get in touch with information about your project. We’ll review this and come back to you with a personalised quote.
Are interpreters in high demand?
Yes, interpreters are in increasingly high demand as globalisation continues to progress, and businesses look to interact with organisations, industry figures, and stakeholders in other regions.
What are the different types of interpretation?
Several different types of interpretation exist, each with slightly different processes and objectives. Part of our business interpretation service is identifying the most suitable type/s depending on the situation at hand.
Here is a summary of the different types of interpretation:
- Ad hoc/liaison: the interpreter will interpret into and out of the target language in small pauses in conversation. This type is well suited to meetings, appointments or group discussions where the pace of the conversation can easily be altered by any present party..
- Consecutive: interpretation will occur after sentences or short periods of speech. This is commonly used during small conferences, business meetings, and visits.
- Simultaneous: interpretation occurs after a 2-3 second delay. This has a higher technical demand and is usually used at summits, conferences and other larger events.
- Telephone: this is a scheduled or an on-demand service where a qualified interpreter joins a conference call to help with impromptu interpreting needs.
- Chuchotage/whispered interpreting: the interpreter whispers the interpretation into a microphone which is transmitted to headsets, allowing for simultaneous interpretation without the need for soundproofed booths. Commonly used in small audiences where several people do not know the source language.
All of the above services are available in face-to-face and remote contexts.
Does AI interpreting really work?
Yes—AI interpreting really works, and it’s already being used successfully in many real-world settings. It uses advanced speech recognition and AI translation to deliver fast interpretation. It works well if the conversation is clear and structured conversations. While it does not replace human interpreters in every situation, it’s a fast, cost-effective solution for many everyday interpreting needs.
