Urdu language – Did you know?

There are approximately 160 million Urdu speakers worldwide, the majority of which live in South Asia. However, there are also native Urdu speakers living in the UK, USA, Fiji and Germany among others. Urdu is the official language of Pakistan and one of the 23 official languages of India.

Urdu is Turkish in origin and belongs to the Indo-Iranian family of language, a descendant of Sanskrit. Urdu, or historically Ordu, means “an army or legion”. Modern Urdu has developed over the past 900 years, the previous language was a combination of Turkish, Persian and Arabic and was spoken by warrior tribes of Central Asia.

Modern Urdu is very similar to Hindi, and if discussions are not technical two people speaking in these two different languages are able to understand each other. However, native speakers would stress that, in spite of similarities, these are two separate languages.

Urdu is written right to left and is a relative of the Arabic alphabet; it is mainly associated with the Nasta’liq style of Arabic writing. This style is extremely difficult to typeset, so much so that newspapers written in Urdu were hand written up until the 1980s.

Even today clients often experience difficulty when typesetting their Urdu translation into original English artwork, this is due to the different order of the text (right-to-left) and also specialised fonts. The Translation People has an experienced team of Urdu typesetters to help you with all your localisation needs.
