Gujarati Translation

Gujarati is spoken principally in Gujarat, one of India’s most prosperous states, as well as in neighbouring states and in Mumbai, one of the world’s most heavily populated cities. With its excellent infrastructure and established industries, Gujarat is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors. In addition, the state’s export industry, which already contributes one fifth of India’s total, is growing rapidly. Use of Gujarati translation can help international businesses successfully target this thriving market.

In the UK, demand for English to Gujarati translations continues to increase and this is not limited only to the public sector. Gujarati language – Did you know?

Worldwide, there are an estimated 46 million speakers of Gujarati, the majority of which live in India, where it is one of 22 official languages. In the UK, it is one of most widely spoken minority languages and is used by some 300,000 people, although this statistic is difficult to confirm as the 2001 census did not question language usage. The Gujarati language has its ancient origins in the Indian state of Gujarat, where it has been spoken for thousands of years. Modern Gujarati has been influenced by Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic, although English has the strongest influence on the language today.

The Gujarati language is written using a form of the Devāngarī script, but unlike Hindi, Gujarati does not have a line running over the characters. This segmental writing system uses characters that each represent a specific consonant and vowel; the addition of subtle marks around the character introduces new combinations. In the past, the Gujarati language was taught orally, however, in recent years, efforts have been made to ensure that bilingual Gujarati dictionaries and teaching materials are available for second language learners. As a consequence, numbers of Gujarati speakers in countries such as the UK and the USA look set to continue to grow.
