Albanian Translation

With EU membership likely in the near future, Albania’s future is looking promising. Since signing of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement in 2006 and becoming a member of NATO in April 2009, the government has been working hard to put into place the political and economical reforms necessary to bring the country into line with other Member States. Recent improvement to the country’s infrastructure has started to attract foreign investment, which has nearly doubled to 1.07 billion Euro by 2006.

Since being granted duty-free access to EU markets, Albania has been looking to strengthen its position as an exporter, which has led to an increased demand for Albanian translations. This looks set to grow further with the opening in June 2009 of a new tunnel link to Kosovo, giving Albania status as an important trade hub in the Balkans. Furthermore, large deposits of oil and gas have been discovered, which will see Albania emerge as a player in the energy market.

As Albania’s economy strengthens, translations will play an important role in building relationships with trade and export partners. The Translation People can supply English to Albanian translations produced by our experts in a wide range of fields, helping you successfully communicate with your target market.

Albanian language – Did you know?

Spoken by nearly 7.5 million people in the Balkans, Albanian is an official language in Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro. The official form of the Albanian language is based on Tosk, one of 3 dialects spoken in the country, along with Gheg and a transitional dialect that is a blend of both. The Shkumbin river divides the Gheg (north) and Tosk (south) speaking regions and although when written the two variants are mutually intelligible, there are so many spoken variations that two people from either sides of the country would struggle to understand one another!

The Albanian Language is thought to be the only language derived from the extinct language of Illyrian. Although not closely related to any other Indo-European language, modern Albanian shows signs of having been influenced by many other languages. Early trade routes brought vocabulary of Latin, Greek, Turkish and Persian origin, as well as influences from other Slavic languages, particularly Bulgarian. The Albanian alphabet has been shaped by just as many sources; the earliest written records are of the Gheg dialect written in the Latin alphabet with Italian and Greek influenced spelling. It was not until 1908 that a standardised Gheg-based spelling was introduced, but after the Second World War, Tosk was adopted as the official Albanian language.
