Types of interpreting service

Simultaneous interpreting is most often used at large multinational meetings where proceedings are interpreted with a 2-3 second delay. It's a more complex form of interpreting and involves teams of two or three skilled interpreters working in soundproofed booths. Telephone interpreting is consecutive interpreting over the telephone, and can be arranged with an interpreter on speaker-phone, dialling into a conference call or simply by calling the interpreter and passing the phone between parties.
Chuchotage or ‘whispered' interpreting is when an interpreter sits beside one or two delegates at a meeting or conference and whispers the translated language either simultaneously or consecutively.

What is Ad Hoc interpreting?
"Ad hoc interpreting" is something of an umbrella term covering many different forms of interpreting. Generally, ad-hoc interpreting is used in less formal situations where a conversation is taking place between just two people, for example at hospital visits, solicitors' appointments or small business meetings. This is also known as "liaison interpreting".
Although both are referred to as ad hoc interpreting, the role of a professional ad hoc interpreter in a business setting should not be confused with how the term is used in medical circles. Often medical professionals will use the term ad hoc interpreter to describe a member of the patient's family or a member of staff who speaks both source and target languages but is not professionally trained medical interpreter.

What is Chuchotage/whispered interpretation?
Chuchotage interpretation, also called "whispered interpretation", is when an interpreter sits besides one or two target audience members at a conference or meeting and whispers the target language simultaneously or consecutively.
This is ideal for times when only one or two audience members do not understand the source language, however is hard on the interpreters' vocal cords and so is best for short speeches.

Consecutive Interpreting
For over 30 years we have been supplying consecutive interpreters for a wide range of events across the UK.
In Manchester, one of our experienced interpreters accompanied Portuguese employees from a chemical manufacturing company on their visit to our client's head office in the UK. Their visit included a tour of the factory and shop floor, presentations and question and answer sessions. Our interpreter was on hand throughout to ensure the information was accurately conveyed to the Portuguese employees.
For this particular assignment, our interpreter was a qualified Portuguese native speaker who was also an experienced chemical engineer. This specialised background allowed our interpreter to confidently communicate technical terminology in both languages and exchange precise information in a clear and concise manner.

What is Consecutive interpreting?
Consecutive interpreting is when the speaker pauses after a segment of speech in order for the interpreter to relay information. This is often done in settings such as courtrooms, business meetings and conferences.
It is important to decide beforehand how long or short each part will be. Some clients prefer this to be done on a sentence by sentence basis, whereas others prefer to wait for as long as ten or fifteen minutes before pausing for the interpreter. If the latter is preferred, the interpreter will take notes in order to accurately deliver the message. Finding the right balance is important; if the pauses are frequent it is easier to pass on more detailed information, but can lead to a less coherent understanding of the bigger picture.
Likewise, it is difficult for an audience to sit through long portions of a speech they do not understand, whilst waiting for the interpretation. The complexity and context of information is therefore a key consideration.
This form of interpretation is preferred at smaller, more formal business meetings, either face-to-face or during a conference call.

What is Simultaneous interpretation?
Simultaneous interpretation is when the source language is rendered into the target language with only a two or three second delay. This is done by a team of two or three interpreters who listen to the speech through a headset whilst sat in a soundproof booth.
More often than not, this will involve one interpreter speaking continuously whilst another listens in for more detail and to check the accuracy of the information passed on by the first. Interpreting in this form is very demanding and interpreters usually switch roles every twenty minutes in order to maintain their concentration and accuracy.
As well as being the most difficult form of interpretation, simultaneous is unsurprisingly the most expensive too. It requires the highest level of expertise, the most equipment and at least two interpreters to carry out the assignment effectively.
Simultaneous interpreting is most commonly used at large summits and political meetings such as at United Nations Security Council and General Assembly meetings, but is not restricted to such high profile events, often being used for conferences, congregations, and conventions across the UK every day.
