Translation grants for SMEs

Small businesses looking to grow overseas may be eligible for financial support for the translation of their website and marketing materials.

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) is a Government organisation that helps UK-based businesses to succeed in international markets. Its Passport to Export scheme offers new or inexperienced exporters the tools needed to grow a business abroad.

This can include funding for professional translation services, so businesses can overcome cultural barriers and communicate to new markets in the native language – making those all-important first impressions really count.

David Nichols, a director of The Translation People and an international trade specialist, said: “More and more UK companies are taking advantage of the competitive pound and starting or growing their exports to foreign markets.

“Getting your marketing message right is vital, and it is fantastic that UKTI is offering such targeted support for businesses, through the Passport to Export scheme.”

CGP Books, based in Cumbria, is the UK’s leading publisher of education revision material and has sold over 60 million books.

Working against tight deadlines, The Translation People were commissioned by CGP to translate a comprehensive suite of mathematics textbooks from English into Latin American Spanish.

The project entailed the translation of three, 450-page textbooks on core subjects – mathematics and algebra, three corresponding homework books (250 pages), including worked examples, practical exercises and explanations for parents/carers and around 170 worksheets for each of the three levels.

“This was a very important project for us, because it represents our first set of state-adopted textbooks for the California education market.

“We had originally considered doing the translation ourselves but quickly realised that we needed specialist support.

“Because we had never done anything like this before, it was hard to give up control, but The Translation People gave us absolute confidence in the process. They organised a schedule that would work against our tight deadlines and delivered everything as agreed.”

National Launch of Gateways into Languages

The Gateways into Languages graduate placement programme celebrated its official launch in April at the Institute of Engineering and Technology on London’s Savoy Place.

The event celebrated the success of the pilot phase of the DIUS-funded programme, which aims to improve the employability of students graduating from postgraduate translation courses through work placements in translation companies. Roevin took part in the project in partnership with the Association of Translation Companies , CILT, the national centre for languages, six universities and four other ATC-member translation companies.

The pilot phase of the programme demonstrated that a successful partnership between employers and HE institutions can produce excellent results by improving the work readiness of students and raising their awareness of how the industry works through first hand experience. Three of the nine students who took part in the pilot programme have been offered jobs in their host companies, including our own Natasha Williams, who initially joined us on placement last July, but soon proved herself indispensable!

The project has proved so successful that it has received extra funding from DIUS to develop the partnership further across England.

The launch was attended by students, employers and universities already taking part in the project, along with representatives from other translation companies, who had the chance to see for themselves the benefits of the scheme. Speeches came from Lord Dearing, a long-term supporter of Apprenticeships and Anne Davidson Lund, CILT’s Director of Policy Research.

ITI Regional Network Event

Roevin is a longstanding corporate member of the The Institute of Translation & Interpreting (ITI) which was founded in 1986 as the only independent professional association of practising translators and interpreters in the UK. It is now one of the primary sources of information on these services to government, industry, the media and the general public. It aims to promote the highest standards in the profession. The ITI also has a very well-developed system of networks and regional groups of which some Roevin staff are members. The regional groups organise professional and social events which share good practice and update members on the latest trends in the industry.

West Midlands Regional ITI Group members Natasha Williams and Gail Owen from the Birmingham office took part in the group’s annual winter walk to the stone houses at Kinver Edge. The 6-mile walk and dinner provided an excellent opportunity for discussion and networking for the group which includes freelance translators and translation industry professionals.

David Austin Roses is best known for its development of the world-famous English Rose which combines the forms and fragrances of old-fashioned roses with the repeat flowering capabilities and wider colour range of modern roses. The company, based in Albrighton, Shropshire was founded in 1969 and remains a family business, run by David Austin now aged 82 and his son, also called David. Together they have created one of the largest garden rose breeding programmes in the world.

David Austin Roses received a gold medal and ‘Best Exhibit in the Festival of Roses’ at the Hampton Court Flower Show in July 2007. In May, they won a gold medal at Courson flower show, Paris. This year they exhibited for the 25th year at the Chelsea Flower Show and David Austin was awarded an OBE for services to horticulture.

Roevin has been working with David Austin Roses for many years, translating materials into French, Italian, German and Russian. Most recently Roevin was commissioned to translate material into Japanese for the IFEX exhibition in Japan.

Bromford Housing Group provide affordable housing and associated support services to customers throughout Central England. Linn Products Ltd is an independent precision-engineering company specialising in top performance sound reproduction. Founded in 1972 by Ivor Tiefenbrun, the company grew out of Ivor’s belief that he could vastly improve the sound quality of his own hi-fi system. Today, Linn is recognised as the world-leader in pitch-accurate sound reproduction and is renowned for the exceptional quality of its products which are manufactured entirely at Linn’s landmark purpose-built factory building just outside Glasgow.

Linn Products Ltd approached Roevin many years ago for assistance in the translation of instruction manuals for their entertainment systems. Since then, Roevin has worked closely with Linn to provide translations into many of the major European languages as well as Japanese. A particular challenge of translating consumer instruction manuals is that the “user-friendly” descriptions in the original English text must be faithfully and clearly rendered in the foreign language; this often requires close collaboration between translator and client to resolve any difficulties which may arise from the translator not having the entertainment system in front of them as they translate! Roevin’s Account Managers work closely with both Linn and the translator to ensure that the translation process is as problem-free as possible, thus freeing up valuable staff time and resources for the client.

Delegates arrive at the Convention

Roevin was selected by Finmeccanica to supply interpreters for Finmeccanica’s 2006 Convention, held at the NEC Birmingham on 10th and 11th November.

The event was attended by over 2000 Finmeccanica representatives from all over the world. Roevin supplied two Italian/English interpreters to cover the 2 day event, held at Birmingham’s NEC.

Giuditta Carello, Finmeccanica’s event organiser said “We chose Roevin because of their ability to manage the whole project and supply us with both the interpreters and the necessary equipment. The interpreters were very professional and we were very satisfied with the service we received.”

Finmeccanica is the main Italian industrial group operating globally in the aerospace, defence and security sectors. It is also one of the world’s leading groups in the field of helicopters and defence electronics, as well as being the European leader for satellite and space services.
