Punjabi translation

The Translation People is regularly approached by housing associations and public sector bodies who require Punjabi translations of public information, legal documents and general correspondence. Punjabi is said to be the second most commonly used language in the UK, spoken by approximately 1.3 million people in the UK. Due to the colonial relationship between Britain and India many Punjabi speakers have migrated to the UK in the last fifty years. Although many of these people have now had children and a large second generation community has integrated into British society, Punjabi is still widely spoken. The most effective method of communicating with the Punjabi community is in their mother tongue.

Our English to Punjabi translations are produced by our translation experts in a wide range of fields.

All our Punjabi translators have several years professional translation experience and undergo a rigorous selection procedure.

Punjabi language – Did you know?

Punjabi, an Indo-Aryan language, is spoken by approximately 104 million people world wide; approximately 80 million of these speakers live in Pakistan and 30 million in India. Punjabi is thought to be the 11th most widely spoken language in the world. Interestingly, Punjabi is believed to be the most common language among British Asians and has become the second language in Britain, used by an estimated 1.3 million people. In light of this staggering figure central and local government bodies, in order to plan the provision and development of policies and services in an effective and culturally sensitive way, must seriously consider translating relevant documentation into Punjabi.

The number of Punjabi speakers living in the UK has its roots in Great Britain’s colonial history. The British ruled the Punjab in the 19th century, up until independence was gained in 1947. The state of Punjab became much smaller and was split between India and Pakistan. During the long period of British rule a relationship between the British and the Punjabi people was built up and many people migrated to Britain from Pakistan and India. The first generation of migrants came to perform hard labour, low paid jobs that were difficult to fill; more than 50 years on they have stayed in Britain, brought their families over and second generations are now successful young professionals working in Healthcare and Finance among other sectors. While many of these people have grown up in Britain, they are interested in their heritage and many speak Punjabi at home as this is their family’s first language.
